Joel is a hard charging aggressive free- surfer, a natural talent and a down-to-earth friendly guy.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement in your surfing career?
Shaping my own surfboards.
You’re a sponsored freesurfer. Want to gloat a bit?
I love surfing, and even better being paid to surf perfect waves!
We’ve seen pics of you towing into massive Teahupo’o, paddling Mavericks and taking on big close-out days in Hawaii. Which one stands out in your mind as the most memorable?
Mavericks is the most scary wave I have ever seen! Tahiti is the most dangerous and Hawaii...well you have to learn somewhere! They are all special and great achievements.

The fear question – don’t you ever get scared?
I get scared like everybody else. I just don't let on!
You come from a rich surfing heritage. Does that ever put pressure on you?
No
So boards: Thruster vs. Single Fin, the old Drifta model, the Widow Maker, the keel fish revival? What’s your take on all of this?
It is good to know where surfboards have evolved from. Design and research are all parts of surfing. Surfers should know how their boards work, right down to shaping them! I think I have done the whole single fin shortboard revolution in the last two years! I have gone right from early wing pin singles to swallow twins to thrusters. Now I have the fastest thruster quiver and I’m finishing my own boards!
Are you going to tell us where that sick left hander that you surfed in Litmus was?
Ireland
Any projects you want to plug at the moment?
Sure! Looking at finding the world’s best sand bottom left point!
In your career as a free surfer you must have travelled to some fairly exotic/remote locations and made a few discoveries in your time. You must have some good stories from the road?
I would say the last trip to G'land with Tom Carroll was my favourite! He is such a great surfer and teacher and funny as hell! I think no matter where you go you always look for a better ride or a different experience! I am having one right now in Sydney, Australia.
If you had to give advice to someone looking to improve their surfing, what would it be?
Go to surf school
(Yeah, but what in particular; one thing that will make them surf better in their next session?)
Think skipping stone, stay low go go go !
